Tykkylumi

Photography by Lea Flühler

"Tykkylumi" is a photographic collection born from a winter expedition into the Finnish Laplands, in the area of Äkäslompolo. The title itself refers to a specific and visually arresting snow phenomenon: "tykkylumi," a Finnish term that translates to "crown snow-load" in English. This occurs when a mix of snow and rime ice accumulates on trees and structures, creating thick, sculpted formations that transform the landscape. This collection captures the dramatic beauty of this phenomenon, showcasing the weight and artistry of nature's winter handiwork. The images also explore the unique light and atmosphere of the Finnish winter. With limited daylight hours, sunrises and sunsets paint the snow-covered vistas in fleeting, yet intense hues, adding a layer of ephemeral beauty to the already striking scenes. This collection documents the raw, powerful, and beautiful winter environment, where "tykkylumi" shapes the land and light defines the day.
